There’s Adele playing softly in the background as the lights go dim. The aroma from the scented candles wafts across the room and they look into each other’s eyes. She kicks off her shoes, he takes off his tie. The red cocktail gown beats the shirt to the floor and then ... well, and then either things go off like a wet fire cracker or the mood runs out before the music does. And that’s on a good day. For days when Murphy’s getting naughty playing with his law (and most days can get that way if you happen to have even a moderately successful career), you can say goodbye to even trying to get between the sheets together. The problem living in cities is that we are burning the candle at both ends, which makes for some degree of quantity, but very little as far as quality is concerned.
Let me just cut to the chase and give you the bad news straight up and that is, if you have been living the average yuppie life, then in all probability you have been progressively making yourself ‘unfit for sex’. And how do you find out where you stand on the pleasure spectrum? Well, if you only remember the prologue and not the epilogue, then maybe it’s an indicator that you aren’t having as much fun as your naughty side might have to offer. However, it doesn’t take much to train your little soldiers for victory.
Dr Deepak Arora, one of India’s youngest sexologists, says that you can be termed sexually fit when you “mentally and physically enjoy the act and not just perform the act”. Sexual fitness can be enhanced by enhancing your physical fitness. There is a very simple correlation between the two – sex is about feeling pleasure, and you become more sensitive and sensually aware when there is greater blood flow to all parts of your body and for this, physical fitness is absolutely vital.
Enhance cardio-vascular fitness. Run, jog or swim at least thrice a week. Feeling fit enhances libido and makes one more confident and body aware. And while you work that body, don’t ignore the mind. As per Dr Arora, more and more men and women from the IT and BPO sectors are facing sexual health problems due to high stress levels at work. Women complain too often about low libido because they are too tired and drained of energy after a full day spent balancing household chores and office work. And quite often, they do not know this reason and blame themselves for a lacklustre sex life. So unless you want to get randy only post retirement, which with the way things are going, might not be as easy as you think, do learn to take a break and engage in some ‘active rest’ every now and then. Find pleasure in balance.
Sex is not a duty or an egotistical sport, but an expression of love for yourself, your body and your partner. Hence, communication becomes a very important part of the act. You need to understand your partner’s needs and wants. So when you engage yourself intimately, be aware, responsive as well as receptive to emotions and needs, both your own and your partner’s. Discover yourself and your partner; be free of inhibitions and thoughts, and then maybe you will rediscover why having sex is actually about making love…
